Singapore Waterproofing team attended a large-scale food manufacturing facility in Singapore where they inspected two floor slab panels that had cracked and also had become unstable, as identified by our client. Due to the failure of the slab our Singapore team was given the task of removing localised sections of the slab that were unstable, followed by preparing and filling the sections with new concrete.
Public safety was ensured by securing the work area for the duration of the process. When saw cutting or breaking any concrete on the slab, wet methods were used. Wet vac systems were used to vacuum the ensuing slurry, while skip bins were used to remove the concrete rubble.
Steel reinforcement ends were coated with a primer that prevents future rusting by electrochemical means.
Using Hilti glue, new 12mm galvanised reinforcement bars were chemically glued into place into the existing slab. Additional reinforcement grids were also laid prior to pouring the concrete mix. During this project, we used Nanocrete R4, which is a single component, extra high-strength, high modulus, shrinkage compensated structural repair mortar.
The open edges of the sections were formed.
Concrete was mixed outside to minimalise dust inside the factory.
The concrete mix was poured and screeded.
As the slab dried, rough edges were rubbed out.
To support greater loads and traffic, the wet slab was sectioned off and left to cure until it met MPA strength requirements. Before leaving the site, a mop was used to clean the area thoroughly. Afterwards, the expansion joints will be sealed with joint sealant to prevent water, chemicals and other foreign matter from getting into them in the future.
In order to further prolong the life of concrete, we generally recommend the installation of a coating system. We recommend implementing a maintenance program tailored for the environment the building is subjected to including dedicated inspections. Regular maintenance checks will help identify any problems in the early stages for repairs, which again will help enhance the service life and reduce the life cycle cost of concrete structures.
